eROSITA image added to JUDO2

DARTS’ JUDO2 is a service that displays images captured by JAXA’s astronomical satellites on the celestial sphere, allowing users to select and download observational data for celestial objects or regions of interest. In addition to JAXA’s observational data, the service allows users to overlay and compare related images and fields of view captured by other satellites and ground-based observatories. The Solid-state Slit Camera (SSC) aboard JAXA’s All-Sky X-ray Monitor ( MAXI ), launched in 2009, was the first in the world to acquire all-sky images using an X-ray CCD camera. By leveraging the CCD’s excellent energy resolution, it was able to reveal the energy distribution of low-energy X-ray emission that extends widely around the galactic plane. We have now added hemispheric images from eROSITA, an X-ray telescope jointly developed by Europe and Russia, to JUDO2. Since eROSITA has vastly superior spatial resolution compared to MAXI, it allows for a more detailed examination of the spatial structure of X-ray emission. The image on the right shows the MAXI/SSC and eROSITA images overlaid on JUDO2. Unfortunately, of eROSITA’s full-sky observation data, only the data for one hemisphere is currently available to the public. This is due to political circumstances. Let us hope that the data for the remaining hemisphere will be released soon. Until then, the MAXI/SSC images, which cover the entire sky, will continue to play a vital role. (November 2026)
